Social Media Marketing vs Google Ads for Goa Businesses
13 October 2026 · Digital Marketing
Every month a Goa business owner asks us the same thing: should the marketing money go to Instagram and Facebook, or to Google? The social media marketing vs Google ads question sounds like a tools question, but it is really a question about your customer, and where they are in their decision when they meet you.
There is no single right answer, and anyone who gives you one without asking what you sell is guessing. Here is how we would think about it if it were our own money.
Someone searching vs someone scrolling
This is the whole difference. On Google, a person types what they want right now: "scooter rental Anjuna", "dentist in Margao", "birthday cake home delivery Panjim". They already have the need. Your ad only has to show up and not look suspicious.
On Instagram and Facebook, nobody is looking for you. They are looking at photos of friends and reels. Your ad or post interrupts them. That is not a weakness, because it is how people discover things they did not know to search for. A new cafe in Assagao, a boutique in Saligao, a weekend market: people rarely search for these by name until they have seen them somewhere first.
So Google captures demand that already exists. Social media creates interest and keeps you in front of people until they are ready. Both are useful, but they do different jobs, and they are priced and measured differently.
Which one fits which kind of business
Rough guidance, based on how people actually buy these things:
- Clinics, dentists, repair services, lawyers, CAs, tutors: start with Google. People search when they have a problem, and they want it solved this week.
- Cafes, restaurants, bakeries, boutiques, salons: start with Instagram and Facebook. The product is visual and the decision is impulsive. Good photos do more work than any keyword.
- Hotels, villas and homestays: a mix, but be careful. Google searches for stays in Goa are crowded, with booking portals and big hotels bidding on the same words, so clicks can be expensive. A small homestay often does better with Instagram content plus a decent Google Business Profile, and keeps paid Google for peak weeks.
- Event, wedding and photography services: Instagram for showing your work, Google for people who search "wedding photographer Goa" once the date is fixed. Both matter, in that order of effort.
- Shops selling everyday items to locals: usually neither paid channel first. A correct Google Maps listing and a WhatsApp number that gets answered will do more.
Goa's season changes the answer
Many Goa businesses earn most of their year between roughly October and March. That timing matters for how you spend.
Tourists plan before they land. Searches and Instagram browsing for stays, restaurants and experiences start weeks ahead, so spending in the month you are already full is often too late. If you want December bookings, your ads or content should be working in September and October.
The monsoon is the opposite. Google Ads for tourist services can go quiet, and the cheaper move is to use social media to keep your audience warm, show off the green season, and bring in local and Indian weekend visitors. Pausing paid Google in the slow months and keeping a small social budget running is often sensible. Just do not switch everything off and start from zero in October.
How to split a small budget
Suppose you have a modest monthly amount and a small team. Here is a way to think about it, not a formula:
- Fix the free things first. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile with real photos, correct timings and a phone number that works. This costs nothing and shows up on Maps.
- Pick one paid channel based on the table above, and run it for at least six to eight weeks before judging. A week or two of data tells you very little.
- If you choose Google, spend only on a few specific searches that show buying intent, such as "book" or "near me" type phrases, rather than broad terms like "Goa hotels".
- If you choose Instagram and Facebook, use ads that open a WhatsApp chat or a call. Many Goa customers would rather message than fill a form.
- Once one channel is producing enquiries you can trace, add the second with a smaller share, perhaps a quarter to a third of the total, and watch what happens.
Splitting a small budget evenly across both from day one usually means neither gets enough money to learn anything.
Mistakes that quietly waste the money
- Sending paid clicks to a slow or confusing page. If the ad promises a table booking and the page opens a generic homepage, the money is gone. A focused page matters; see our notes on optimizing your landing page.
- Boosting posts and calling it a strategy. The Boost button is fine for a quick test, but it gives you little control over who sees the ad or what happens next.
- Not tracking where enquiries come from. If calls, WhatsApp messages and walk-ins all just say "I saw you online", you cannot tell what is working. Ask every new customer how they found you and write it down.
- Slow replies. A lead that waits four hours on WhatsApp in peak season is already booked elsewhere.
- Judging social media by likes. Likes do not pay rent. Look at enquiries, bookings and repeat visits.
- Running Google Ads without a real website. You need somewhere credible to send people. If yours is outdated, fix that before you spend on traffic; our website design and development team can help with that.
What we would do this week
Write down what one new customer is worth to you, then decide how many enquiries you need each month to make a paid channel worthwhile. Check your Google Business Profile. Then choose one channel, set a fixed budget for two months, and decide in advance what result would make you continue or stop.
If you would rather not run this yourself, Codanto handles Facebook and Instagram marketing as well as Google Ads, along with the website and tracking behind them. You can read about our social media and digital marketing work, or get in touch and tell us what you sell and what you can spend. We will tell you plainly which channel to try first, and sometimes the answer is to fix your listing and wait.
